yours truly

Hi there!

I am Kenzie, hailing from Burlington, Ontario.

I really do like long walks on the beach and candle-lit dinners.  My favourite colour is purple, I only like one of my dogs, I still can’t decide on my favourite author or band, and although I have wicked aim with a handgun, I suck at beer pong.  And as far as I’m concerned, The Princess Bride and Armageddon are the two greatest movies ever made.

I don’t follow any particular religion, but I have no problem with there being higher power. My extended family is a mess of fascinating people, from firefighters to CEOs.  Thanks to them, my background is a melting pot of cultures: Russian, Polish, Austrian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Irish, Scottish, and Italian … and those are just the ones I know for sure.

I haven’t travelled very much. Or at least not as much as I would like to.  I’ve been on a few vacations with my family: Disney World, a road trip to Eastern Canada, and a cruise in the Caribbean.  But I’ve also travelled on my own to Australia, where I lived for a year.  I’ve probably seen more of that beautiful country than many Australians.

My biggest hobby is reading. My parents started me reading pretty early.  By the time my peers were starting to read Robert Munsch on their own, I was cracking the spine on the latest Harry Potter (I’m kidding, of course…I would never crack a spine on a book). I’ve recently sworn to only read classics, award-winners, best-sellers, and anything that will expand my knowledge in Psychology. My hope is to discover some of my favourite authors and styles of writing, and (ideally) develop my own writing skills through observing the talent of others.

In September of 2012, I began my post-secondary journey at the beautiful Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Through this blog I plan to track my university experiences from application to graduation … most likely leaving out the events that could get me arrested or give my mother a heart attack! [Update: as it turns out, I am, indeed, an antisocial nerd. Risk of arrest or unintended matricide is unlikely.]

Hope you all stick with me and enjoy the ride!

  1. Kenzie Bender, I do not know you but I love you. There, I’ve said it. That sounds creepy, let me clarify…
Reading your posts on the various Queen’s Facebook pages and your blog, I feel as though you are a long lost friend – we’re interested in all the same things! I was particularly impressed with the numerous posts about environmental issues and specifically the water problem. For the past two years I have been working with my high school’s Geography Club on the Water Campaign and sometimes it felt a little hopeless, because the school didn’t respond all that well. I’m glad to know there is someone out there who cares about this as much as i do!
I’m planning to major in Environmental Science and I hope to make this kind of thing my life’s work.
I’m so excited for Queen’s in the fall and I hope I get a chance to meet you :)
Keep doing what you do, it’s fantastic..And enjoy the summer!

    • Thanks Meg. Definitely keep trying with the environment thing. I tried to get my school interested in a bunch of stuff like that, and it never really stuck (high school kids have bigger issues). I’m sure you’ll find more receptive crowds at university.
      Kenz
