words to live by

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.” — Marcus Aurelius

I love quotes. I love knowing that before I was even born, Einstein or J.F.K. or Epicurus, in all their brilliance, have put into words something I’ve been trying to say for years. There are people in our past who have noticed something profound and found a truly memorable way to explain their view on it. And the result of their thoughtfulness can go on to effect future people long after they’ve gone.

Not everyone has found the quote, motto, saying, or proverb that can shape or direct their lives. Here are some that have affected me. Maybe you’ll find one for yourself here. Or maybe you already have one of your own. Feel free to share in the comments! :)

“Your joy can fill you only as deep as your sorrow has carved you.”

— Kahlil Gibran

“He who has a why to live for, can bear almost any how.”

— Friedrich Nietzsche

“It is folly for a man to pray to the gods for that which he has the power to obtain by himself.”

— Epicurus

Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.

— Albert Einstein

“It is not so much the help of our friends that helps us, but the confidence of their help.”

— Epicurus

“If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”

— John F. Kennedy

“Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice.”

— Elizabeth Cady Stanton

“The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.”

— Albert Einstein

“A man is not idle because he is absorbed in thought.  There is a visible labour and there is an invisible labour.”

— Victor Hugo

“It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.”

— Albert Einstein

“All men are created equal. It is only men themselves who place themselves above equality.”

— David Allan Coe

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”

— Epicurus

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

— Marianne Williamson
